RABIES VECTOR SPECIES TRAINING

The RVS class includes hands-on training for animal handling and restraint as well as hygiene and infectious agent transmission prevention.  Participants will learn and understand  the regulations regarding RVS treatment and release, the importance of pre-exposure vaccination and minimum standards for facilities to ensure proper quarantine and isolation capabilities.  We will also cover some aspects of keeping RVS in permanent education collections and preventive vaccination options.  Participants receive the RVS handbook which includes the current Health Department rabies  test submission forms, veterinary recommended vaccine protocols for rehabilitation and education mammals and contact lists for important agencies and vendors.

The Rabies Vector Species class meets the training requirements of ODW for Category II permit holders and sub-permits desiring to rehabilitate fox, skunk, bats and raccoons.  While these “RVS” species require special handling considerations due to the potential for rabies, this class emphasizes the need for awareness that ALL mammals can carry rabies.  The class will cover types of rabies, transmission, signs and differential diagnosis for the infectious diseases  and conditions we more commonly see such as distemper, parvo or baylis roundworm.
